Punjab’s deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal filed his nomination from Jalalabad constituency on Thursday. Sukhbir is the incumbent MLA from the assembly segment. The veteran Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader faces a stiff challenge from Bhagwant Mann, the Sangrur MP representing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Congress is yet to announce its candidate for the seat. Since the past three elections, former Jalalabad MLA Hans Raj Josan has been unsuccessfully contesting on the Congress ticket.
The total number of voters in Jalalabad assembly constituency is 1,92,927. The seats falls under Fazilka district of Punjab. Election Commission had notified 231 polling stations in Jalalabad in the 2012 Punjab Assembly Elections. The polling stations are spread out over 163 different locations in the constituency, in order to provide convenience to the electorate.

Sukhbir, the son of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, has bagged the constituency for two consecutive terms. In the 2009 bypoll from Jalalabad, he defeated Hans Raj Josan of Congress. He was re-elected from the constituency in 2014, once again defeating Hans Raj Josan.The electoral battle in Jalalabad has turned intense. The convoy of Sukhbir Badal was attacked with stones on Monday allegedly by supporters of AAP. The stone-pelting incident was reported a day after AAP MP Bhagwant Mann reportedly provoked a gathering of supporters.
