A religious function in Bathinda’s Rampura Phul constituency on Monday courted controversy when sermons were reportedly recited at the conclusion of Ramayana in a manner “ardas” is performed. The alleged episode has angered Sikh intellectuals and religious leaders, more so because Rural Development Minister Sikander Singh Maluka was present when the sermons were being recited. The occasion was the inauguration of his office.

The minister has been accused of desecrating Sikh religion. The video clip of the alleged episode has gone viral on the social media. The minister is seen standing, while the “ardas” is being offered. Some words in the “ardas” are reportedly distorted. The minister, who belongs to the Panthic party, has drawn flak from several quarters. Bir Devinder Singh, former Deputy Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha, said, “The imitation of the ‘ardas’ by a non-Sikh priest in a political function is a blasphemous act, and deserves strong objection and legal action.” Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh directed SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar to inquire into the matter. He asked the SGPC to procure the video of the incident and get it scrutinised from “Panj Pyaras” to ascertain whether or not the act amounted to desecration of the religion and identify others involved in it.
