Faridkot: Holding Inspector Gurmeet Singh, former Jaito SHO, prima facie guilty of negligence and dereliction of duty, SSP Nanak Singh today asked the District Magistrate (DM)-cum-Deputy Commissioner to start a departmental magisterial inquiry against the cop.
The SSP wrote to the DM that Gurmeet had failed to maintain law and order, which had led to the death of a DSP and a Constable. District Magistrate Rajiv Prashar said action would be taken as per the SSP’s recommendation.
Under Rule 16.38 of the Punjab Police Rules, a police official can be dismissed from service and prosecuted for his wrongdoings.
Accused of torturing three students, including two girls, Gurmeet was shifted to the Police Lines on Tuesday after the death of DSP Baljinder Singh Sandhu and Constable Lal Singh.
The DSP had allegedly shot himself with his service revolver during a students’ protest. The bullet, after piercing the DSP’s head, had hit his gunman (Lal Singh) in the eye.
The DSP reportedly drew flak even though it was Gurmeet who had failed to pacify students protesting against the thrashing of three of them on January 12.
Booked in four criminal cases during the past 10 years, Gurmeet was dismissed in 2012, but reinstated after his acquittal in these cases.
After a meeting with the SSP, a delegation of students and farmers claimed that the police had agreed to cancel the abetment of suicide case against them. However, the SSP did not comment on the matter.
