A 32-year-old man from Surrey is dead following a targeted shooting in Kerrisdale on Thursday afternoon.

Police say the victim, who has been identified online as real estate agent Kaminder Rai, was found suffering from a gunshot wound on Marguerite Street near West 49th Avenue just before 1 p.m. He was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

Rai was listed as a real estate consultant with Surrey’s Planet Group Realty on the company’s website.
VPD spokesperson Const. Jason Doucette said police have determined the shooting was not random.

It was Vancouver’s sixth homicide of 2018 putting it well ahead of last year’s deadly pace. There were 19 murders total in 2017 — the city’s highest annual tally since 2008 when 20 were recorded during the height of the Metro Vancouver gang war.

“This is Vancouver’s sixth homicide of 2018 and it’s only the middle of February,” Doucette said. “Crime does tend to fluctuate throughout the year, but it’s concerning any time we have a homicide in Vancouver — targeted or not. We’re continuing to work with our partners throughout the region to solve these crimes and prevent future violence.”

Doucette said officers would be in the area on Friday canvassing for witnesses and additional evidence.
