Two men, who had their faces covered, allegedly fired five shots at AAP leader Gurpartap Singh Khushalpur’s car here late on Sunday following which the police deployed additional forces.
Senior police officers of Batala police district, including SSP Deepak Hilori, rushed to the spot around midnight.
The SSP said a case under Section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) had been made out against the two unidentified persons.
“Investigations are in progress. We have stumbled upon some clues and are working on them. CCTV footage procured from Kushalpur’s residence is being studied. Five shots were fired out of which two hit his vehicle,” the SSP said.
Kushalpur, who had contested from Dera Baba Nanak in the recently held Punjab Assembly elections, was once a close aide of former Cabinet minister SS Langah and has also remained a Chairman of Punjab Sugarfed.
“I had returned from a workers meeting around 10 pm and was accompanied by four of my colleagues. Suddenly, as I parked my car just outside the gate of my residence, three gun shots were fired towards the side where I was sitting.
“Two of them hit the bonnet. Seconds later, two more shots were heard following which I ducked. The CCTV footage shows that in the melee, the cloth covering the face of one of the accused got removed. I can recognise him if he is presented in front of me,” Kushalpur said.
AAP candidates contesting from the neighbouring seats of Gurdaspur, Dinanagar and Qadian reached the spot within an hour.
Dinanagar candidate Joginder Singh Chhina said state party chief Gurpreet Singh Waraich and Leader of Opposition HS Phoolka had been informed.
“They will be coming to Dera Baba Nanak after finishing their engagements in New Delhi,” he said.
A few days ago Kushalpur had requested the police to provide him with security.
The SSP said that his application was being processed and added that he will be provided guards according to the threat perception being worked out by the department.
