AAP state convener Gurpreet Ghuggi Waraich held a road show to launch his election campaign from the Batala Assembly seat .
Nearly 500 vehicles were part of the procession that commenced from the Amritsar bypass and culminated at Achal Sahib gurdwara located on the outskirts of the town on the Jalandhar road.Padma Shri and international wrestler Kartar Singh and comedy king of yesteryears Balwinder Singh Vicky, famous as Chacha Raunki Ram, accompanied Waraich.
Sources say if sheer number of people and vehicles is any barometer then round one goes to Waraich.
“The response to today’s road show is sure to unnerve the candidates of the two mainline political parties – Ashwani Sekhri of the Congress and LS Lodhinangal of the SAD. Not many politicians can manage the numbers that Waraich gathered today. It was a spontaneous show of strength,” said a former SAD minister.
Slogans in praise of Waraich rented the air. The police had to divert traffic at several places and the policemen had a tough time in handling the surging crowds.
The police had made elaborate arrangements following intelligence reports received by senior officers yesterday that a fairly decent crowd will gather at the event.
Waraich’s campaign manager Harpreet Rimpy said from tomorrow they would visit the villages that fall in the constituency. “There are 81 villages that comprise the Batala seat and we intend to cover them twice by the time the campaign ends. Plans to cover all 35 municipal wards of the city have also been drawn up,” he added.
